Yadira I. Vega Cantú, Ph.D.

Research Areas:

  • Carbon nanostructures, synthesis and applications
  • Polymer composites
  • Electroluminescent materials

Professor Yadira I. Vega-Cantú got her Ph.D. in chemistry at Rice University. Her thesis project involved the study of the degradation of polymers used in the oil-extraction industry. She continued at Rice as a postdoctoral associate working on the chemistry of carbon nanotubes and on the effect of oxide nanoparticles in the hydration of biopolymers. In 2005, she joined the Advanced Materials Division at IPICYT, in San Luis Potosí, Mexico; there, she focused her research on the chemistry and application of carbon-based nanostructures.

In 2012, she moved to Recife, Brazil as a visiting professor in the Department of Fundamental Chemistry and the Graduate Program in Materials Science at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE). There, she developed actuators and photoluminescent composites based on carbon nanotubes.

In 2016, she returned to Mexico as a research professor at Tecnologico de Monterrey, where she taught Chemistry of Materials, Polymer Chemistry and Industrial Formulations based on Nanotechnology in the Department of Chemistry and Nanotechnology.

Dr. Vega-Cantú received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in chemistry at Tecnológico de Monterrey. She has directed 3 PhDs, 3 Masters and 2 undergraduate theses. She has published in scientific journals such as Nanoletters, Nano Today, Chemical Physics Letters, Biomacromolecules, among others. Her research interests focus on the chemistry and application development of carbon-based nanostructured materials.

She is a member of the Mexican National Researchers System (SNI) and of the American Chemical Society (ACS), and she is the sponsor of the ACS Student Chapter at Tecnológico de Monterrey.
