Oscar Alejandro Aguilar obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Chemistry from the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon in 2001. Later, he became laboratory technician in QC labs and occupational safety in Pigmentos & Oxidos, a dyes and colorants manufacturing company in Northern Mexico and Risk management assistant in the glass company Vitro Group. In 2003 he obtained a M.Sc. degree with a specialty in Biotechnology and the Doctorate in Engineering Sciences in 2007, both from Tecnológico de Monterrey in México.

In 2007, Alejandro Aguilar joined the Department of Biotechnology and Food Engineering of Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Monterrey, where he worked as postdoctoral research assistant at the Bioprocesses Research Chair. During 2009 he participated as visiting scientist at the Downstream Processing Laboratory in Jacobs University-Bremen in Germany. Since 2010, Dr. Aguilar has been a full-time research professor attached to Bioprocesses and Synthetic Biology Group, conducting research in the area of ​​design of processes for the extraction and purification of proteins and other compounds through ATPS and Chromatography. He has recently worked with microbial cultures to obtain metabolites of pharmaceutical interest as well as the use of microbial cultures for the production of metallic nanoparticles via fermentations. He has been working on the downstream processing of different bioproducts such as PEGylated proteins and enzymes at different scales from microdevices to pilot plant processes. He has conducted 6 master's and doctoral theses in Tec de Monterrey programs.

In 2014 he was promoted to Associate Research Professor and in that same year he was awarded with Teaching and Research Award at Tecnológico de Monterrey. Dr. Aguilar belongs to the National Researchers Council, currently as Level 1 (2 of 4) and he is member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. From 2017 he is the chair of the graduate programs in Biotechnology at Tecnológico de Monterrey.
