Miguel A. López Zavala received the B.S. degree in irrigation engineering from Universidad Autónoma Chapingo in 1992, and the M.S. degree and PhD in the field of urban and environmental engineering both from Hokkaido University, Japan, in 2001 and 2004, respectively. He was researcher at the Japan Science and Technology Agency from 2004 to 2005. He is a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences since 2016, and member and evaluator of the national research system of the National Council of Science and Technology, Mexico (CONACYT) since 2006. Prof. López Zavala worked for the Ministry of Agriculture, Mexico, from 1991 to 1989, leading the Agricultural Engineering Coordination at the state of San Luis Potosí and the departments of Irrigation Engineering Technology Transfer at the Headquarters. He is an active member of the International Water Association (IWA) and American Water Works Association (AWWA), and treasurer of la IWA-Mexico from 2010-2011.

In 2005, Prof. López Zavala joined the Water Center for Latin America and the Caribbean as a professor and researcher, position that he has held until now. He is the director of the research initiative “Sustainable Systems for Water Supply and Sanitation”. Prof. López Zavala is a member of the international research groups on sustainable sanitation and sanitation value chain, and leader for Latin America. He is also a member of the research group on water science and technology of Tecnológico de Monterrey, and author of more than 55 scientific papers published in international journals and proceedings of international conferences and congresses. Prof. López Zavala is a speaker and invited speaker in more 75 international congresses, and inventor of 4 patents granted in Mexico, 1 in the USA, and two more under revision in Brazil and India. He has stablished collaboration agreements with Hokkaido University and Hitachi Corporation Japan on students and faculty exchange and joined research, respectively.

Research leadership of Prof. López Zavala at Tecnológico de Monterrey has been awarded with the Rómulo Garza Prize for Research on Science, Technology and Engineering in 2009. He received the award ‘Who is Who in the World’ in 2006 and 2009 as
