Julio C. Gutiérrez-Vega is a full professor in the Physics Department and heads the Photonics and Mathematical Optics Group at Tecnológico de Monterrey, Monterrey, Mexico. He received the B.S. degree in engineering physics and the M.S. degree in electrical engineering with focus on power systems, both from Tecnológico de Monterrey, in 1991 and 1995, respectively.  He obtained the Ph.D. degree in optics from the National Institute for Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics, Mexico, in 2000. His research activities are focused on the physical and mathematical aspects of optical beam propagation in linear and non-linear media, and the application of mathematical methods in Optics and Quantum Mechanics.

Dr. Gutiérrez has authored and co-authored about 91 journal papers and 77 conference proceedings. Their publications report more than 3600 citations to date with a h-index of 30. He served on the editorial committee of the journals “Optics and Photonics News” and “Optics Express”, and was member during 12 years of the scientific committee of the international conference "Laser Beam Shaping".

He is member of the National System of Researchers (SNI) of Mexico at the level 3 (since 2008), and of the Mexican Academy of Sciences (since 2004). His academic leadership at Tecnológico de Monterrey has been awarded with Rómulo Garza Prize for Research and Technology Development in 2008 and 2013; and the Teaching and Research Award in 2003, 2006 and 2009. He received the Insignia Rómulo Garza Prize in 2015 for scientific trajectory in the institution. Dr. Gutiérrez-Vega is a senior member of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the International for Society Optical Engineering (SPIE), and is the president of the Quantum Information Division of the Mexican Physical Society.
