José Ignacio Huertas is a mechanical engineer from Los Andes University, Colombia (1988). He has a master in mechanical engineering from Los Andes University (1990) and from Washington, St. Louis, USA (1994). He is also a doctor of science from Washington University (1997), and an associate professor at Los Andes University until 2002. Currently, he is a full-time professor at Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico. 

Dr. Huertas leaded the Energy Research Group of Los Andes University (GICOM), from 1998 until 2002. He created the Automotive Engineering Research Center-CIMA in Mexico in 2004, and leaded it until 2015. Since then, he works as a researcher of the Energy and Climate Change Research Group of the School of Science and Engineering at Tecnológico de Monterrey. Currently, he is a member of the National System of Researchers in both Mexico and Colombia.

He has published 3 books, and more than 47 papers, related to energy and air pollution mainly. Dr. Huertas has one patent conferred and 2 under evaluation. He has graduated 6 PhD and 87 MSc students, and completed more than 90 research projects financed by private companies and governmental institutions in Colombia, Mexico, Spain, France, and US.
