Héctor Alfonso Barrios Piña, Ph.D

Research Areas:

  • Computational fluid dynamics in shallow water bodies
  • Pollutant dispersion in shallow water bodies
  • Mass transfer and heat flow in gas flow
  • Flood risk management

Héctor Barrios received the B.S. degree in civil engineering and the M.S. degree in hydraulics from the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, in 2000 and 2005, respectively. He obtained a Ph.D. degree in numerical modeling and fluid mechanics from the Aix-Marseille Université, France in 2010. In 2011, he did a postdoctoral research funded by CONACYT at the Mexican Petroleum Institute, where he carried out applied research to the oil industry, specifically in the analysis of the currents of the Gulf of Mexico.

In 2012, he began working at Tecnológico de Monterrey Campus Guadalajara as a research professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, where he taught bachelor level courses related to hydraulics. In 2016, he joined the School of Engineering and Sciences of Tecnológico de Monterrey, advising thesis in the field of numerical modeling applied to the analysis of different fluid flow configurations. He currently serves as director of the Regional Department of Sustainable Technologies and Civil in the western region of Mexico.

In the field of research, he has published scientific papers in International Journals and book chapters on topics related to the analysis of free surface flows and the basic physics of gas flows through numerical modeling. He has also participated in several National and International Congresses, such as the French Congress of Mechanics, the Latin American Congress of Hydraulics, the International Water Association Congress, the National Congress of Hydraulics, and the Congress of the Division of Fluid Dynamics. In terms of consultancy, Héctor Barrios has participated in different projects, focused on the analysis of hydrodynamic parameters and transport of pollutants in estuaries and river discharges, in the framework of environmental impact statements, design of hydro-sanitary structures and coastal structures.
