Diana L. Cárdenas received the PhD degree in microbiology from Facultad de Ciencias Biológicas, Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León in 2013, and MS in microbiology and BA in biology from the same university in 2007 and 2003 respectively. She has also conducted research at the Institute of Neurobiology of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Center for Research and Advanced Studies of IPN (CINVESTAV), and Biozentrum Institute of the University of Basel, Switzerland.

Diana Cárdenas is a member of the Mexican Research National System (SNI 1). She has 13 recent publications Q1/Q2 in different indexed journals (PNAS, Journal of the Royal Society Interface, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, and Microbial Biotechnology) and more publications in current revision. She has been invited as a speaker in national and international conferences focused in biology, genetic engineering, environmental microbiology and biotechnological application issues. Her recent research focuses on microorganism selection for effluent bioremediation, production of enzymes with industrial application and water treatment, use of byproducts to generate value-added products and detection of emerging contaminants in superficial and groundwater.

She has been awarded with the Research Award UANL in Natural Sciences category, DOW Chemical Award in water category, Magna Cum Laude in PhD studies, and other honorific mentions.
