Berenice Vergara Porras, Ph.D.

Berenice Vergara Porras, Ph.D.

Research Areas:

  • Nano and Biomaterials
  • Biosynthesis of polymers
  • Production and application of bio and nanomaterials.

Berenice Vergara received the B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP) in 2004. In 2006, she earned a M.S. degree in Biotechnology from Centro de Investigación y Estudios Avanzados (CINVESTAV). In 2011, she obtained her Ph.D. degree in Biotechnology also from CINVESTAV. From 2006 to 2011, she was a lecturer at Unidad Profesional Interdisciplinaria de Biotecnología from Instituto Politécnico Nacional.

In 2011, Vergara joined as full time professor of the Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering Department at Tecnológico de Monterrey. From 2012 to 2014, she was appointed Head of the Biotechnology Engineering major; and in 2015, she became Chair of the Postgraduate programs in Engineering. She was appointed chair of the PhD and MSc Programs in Nanotechnology of the Metropolitan Region of Mexico City in August 2017.

The research of Berenice Vergara has been focused on bio and nanopolymers. Particularly, her work involves bacterial synthesized polymers or polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) in three differents aspects. 1. The biosynthesis of PHAs: Control of the chemical structure of PHAs and Development of sustainable production processes, 2. The improvement of thermal and mechanical properties of PHAs: Production and characterization of nanocomposites; and 3. The application of PHAs in the biomedical and pharmaceutical field: Production and development of micro and nanocapsules for drugs delivery systems. In 2013, Berenice Vergara became a member of the Mexican Research National System. She is member of the research group of Nanomaterials and Surface Engineering leader by Prof. Joaquín Oseguera.
